The last month of summer break was packed full of lots of fun. There were so many fun moments to photograph this time – the beach, the pool, and sprinklers (pretty much anything involving water – – it is summer in southwest Florida after all). We were out the door at 7:00 AM on a Sunday morning to enjoy the beautiful sunrise at Siesta Key Beach. It’s one of my favorite places, and my children have taken on the love as well. Some of my favorite portrait sessions are those documenting the fun times families share at the beach and I wanted those same sand and surf-filled moments of my own family. I had a vision – I wanted the cool, hazy light that sunrise on the beach brings. I wanted relaxed, real, family fun. I adore these images. They are just my family. Very little posing was done (unless requested by them). Madelyn had lots of ideas and took the lead while in front of the camera. She discovered a ton of coquina and did stretching right in the water. I love that her smile is still has a mouth full of tiny baby teeth. Thomas had high hopes of catching some fish in his net, but the water was a little rough- by Gulf of Mexico standards anyway, and he came up with lots of empty nets. He had a blast trying though. I love that his tongue is in the hole left behind by the tooth he lost the night before. He also played catch with Dad, something he could do from sunrise until sunset on most days. Caroline was the most excited and happy about the days’ events. She played in the sand, built castles, dug holes, and poured water. Just so, so content. My heart literally skipped a beat when she held a shell up to her ear and said she could hear the ocean in it. Totally unprompted and perfectly captured. That is what this beautiful summer morning was about. My family – together – just being – chasing the last moments of summer.
And, just like that, summer came to a screeching end. The last week of summer was jammed with activities. Caroline turned four, there was meet the teacher night for all three kids, gymnastics shows and dance intensives. I couldn’t post today with sharing the first day of school pictures too. First day of Third grade for Madelyn, first grade for Thomas, and first day of pre-school/VPK for Caroline. This was a big deal in our house. Big deals – Madelyn’s name at her desk was written in cursive!! Thomas is thrilled to have Mrs. Smith and two of his best buddies in class. Caroline’s never been to school We read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and even put little red hearts on the palm of our left hands just in case we needed a little reminder of love.
